Trusted by Jacksonville pet families since 1988. In-house cytology and allergy diagnostics. Treating the cause, not just the flare-up.
Getting to the Actual Cause, Not Just the Symptom
Recurring ear infections. Constant scratching. Skin that flares up every few months no matter what shampoo gets used. These are some of the most frustrating patterns in pet ownership, because treating the current episode often doesn't stop the next one.
At SJB, dermatology and allergy care starts with figuring out what's actually driving the problem. Allergies are the leading cause of recurring ear and skin issues in dogs, and treating the infection without addressing the underlying allergy is a temporary fix at best. Our in-house cytology lets us look at what's actually happening on the skin or in the ear canal (yeast, bacteria, or something else) so treatment targets the real problem.
Jacksonville's humid climate doesn't help. Moisture, swimming, and year-round warm weather all contribute to skin and ear conditions that families in drier climates deal with less often.
What We Diagnose and Treat
- Skin and coat evaluations for chronic itching, rashes, or hair loss
- Allergy diagnosis and management, including food allergy trials
- Chronic ear infection treatment and the underlying cause investigation
- Skin cytology diagnostics (ear, skin, mass) to identify yeast, bacteria, or other causes
- Medicated treatment plans, including topical, oral, and injectable options
- Long-term allergy management plans, not just episode-by-episode treatment
Signs Your Pet May Need a Dermatology Workup
Digital X-Rays (Radiographs):
How a Dermatology Workup Runs
-
1. History and pattern review
We look at when the issue started, how often it recurs, and what's been tried already.
-
2. Physical exam and sampling
Your pet is gently positioned on the imaging table. Digital capture takes seconds per image. Most pets tolerate the process well; sedation is available for anxious or fractious pets when needed.
-
3. In-house cytology results
Processed on-site, often within the same visit, showing whether yeast, bacteria, or another cause is driving the current flare.
-
4. Allergy discussion
If allergies are suspected as the underlying driver, we talk through food trials, environmental factors, or further allergy testing.
-
5. Treatment plan
Addresses both the current flare-up and the longer-term management needed to reduce recurrence.
-
6. Follow-up
A next-day check-in call, plus a recheck visit scheduled if the treatment plan needs adjustment.
Why SJB's Dermatology Approach Is Different
- We look for the cause, not just treat the flare. In-house cytology means we can usually tell what's actually happening, not guess.
- Built for a pattern of recurrence. If this is the third or fourth time, we're looking at what's different about the long-term plan, not repeating the same short-term fix.
- Climate-aware. Northeast Florida's humidity and swimming culture are factored into how we think about prevention between flare-ups.
- Continuity. The same team that treats this flare-up manages the follow-up and the next one if it happens.
How Dermatology Care Fits with Your Wellness Plan
Chronic dermatology treatment is case-specific and billed separately from Complete Care Wellness Plans, since severity and treatment length vary widely. But plan members' annual wellness exams often catch early skin or ear changes before they become a full flare-up, and the same-day diagnostic access that comes with being an established patient means less delay in getting an accurate diagnosis when something does come up.
