What Daytime Hospitalization Means at SJB

Some medical situations need more than a single visit but less than overnight ER care. A dog on IV fluids after a bout of severe vomiting. A cat recovering from surgery who needs monitoring for a few hours before going home. A senior pet whose bloodwork changed and needs supportive care while we run further diagnostics. That's where daytime hospitalization fits.

SJB Animal Care Center offers hospitalization during business hours. Your pet stays in our care from the time they're admitted until they're stable enough to go home or until we close for the day. During those hours, they're monitored by our licensed veterinary team, receive medications and fluids on schedule, and have same-day access to diagnostics and imaging if their condition changes.

Important context: SJB is a daytime hospitalization facility. We are not a 24-hour emergency hospital. For pets who need overnight observation or intensive care after hours, we coordinate transfer to First Coast Veterinary Specialists & Emergency, a 24-hour animal hospital at 301 Jacksonville Dr, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250, phone (904) 853-6310. That transfer happens at the end of our business day if the pet still needs continuous monitoring.

When Daytime Hospitalization Matters Most

Post-surgical recovery patients. Pets recovering from spay, neuter, mass removal, or other soft-tissue procedures often benefit from a few hours of observation after anesthesia before going home.

Dehydrated or vomiting pets. A dog or cat with severe vomiting, diarrhea, or refusal to drink often needs IV fluids to correct dehydration. Same-day fluid therapy is often enough to turn a case around without overnight admission.

Pets with acute illness workups in progress. A pet whose bloodwork just came back abnormal, or whose symptoms are worsening, benefits from staying at the clinic while additional diagnostics are run and initial treatment starts.

Patients on IV antibiotics or medications. Some acute infections require IV antibiotics that can't be given at home. Daytime hospitalization keeps the schedule on track.

Post-emergency stabilization. Pets brought in for urgent care who need continued observation for the rest of the day before being discharged or transferred.

Chronic condition flare-ups. A diabetic dog with unstable glucose, a kidney patient whose values worsened, a heart patient with a fluid buildup. Same-day monitoring and IV support often catches these episodes without escalating to overnight ER care.

Pets who need close observation without full ER admission. The middle ground between outpatient care and 24-hour hospitalization.

What Daytime Hospitalization Covers

Monitoring and supportive care:

  • Continuous observation by licensed veterinary staff during business hours
  • Vital sign monitoring (temperature, pulse, respiration, hydration)
  • Neurological assessments for post-surgical or neurologically compromised patients
  • Pain assessment and pain management protocols
  • Nutritional support (assisted feeding, appetite monitoring)

IV fluid therapy:

  • IV catheter placement and maintenance
  • Fluid rate calculations tailored to hydration status, kidney function, and electrolyte balance
  • Correction of dehydration and electrolyte imbalances
  • Supportive fluids during post-surgical recovery

Medication administration:

  • Scheduled injectable medications
  • Intravenous antibiotics, anti-nausea medications, and pain control
  • Chronic condition medication management for hospitalized patients
  • Continuous rate infusions when needed
  • In-house lab access for same-day bloodwork changes
  • On-site digital X-rays and ultrasound if condition warrants

Post-surgical recovery care:

  • Anesthesia recovery monitoring
  • Pain management protocols
  • Surgical site observation for bleeding, swelling, or infection
  • Return-to-eating and elimination monitoring
  • Discharge coordination with detailed home-care instructions
  • Real-time treatment adjustments based on new findings

How a Daytime Hospitalization Stay Runs

The workflow is designed to make sure every hour your pet is with us contributes to their recovery.

  • 1. Admission and initial assessment

When your pet is admitted, the vet team performs a full assessment, places an IV catheter if needed, and starts initial treatment.

  • 2. Treatment plan and communication

You'll receive a call from the team with the plan for the day: what treatments are running, what diagnostics are being done, and what to expect at pickup.

  • 3. Monitoring and treatment through the day

Vital signs are checked at scheduled intervals. IV fluids run at the calculated rate. Medications are administered on schedule. Diagnostics are run as needed and results are reviewed as they come in.

  • 4. Midday update call (for extended stays)

For pets staying most of the day, you'll get a midday call to update you on progress and any changes to the plan.

  • 6. Or transfer to First Coast if overnight care is needed

If your pet still needs continuous monitoring at the end of the business day, we coordinate transfer to First Coast Veterinary Specialists & Emergency. The transfer includes a full medical handoff so the receiving team picks up exactly where we left off.

  • 7. Next-day follow-up call

Whether your pet went home or transferred to First Coast, a team member calls the next day to check in.

Why SJB's Daytime Hospitalization Is Different

  • Clear scope. Daytime hospitalization only. Honest about what we do and don't do. For overnight care, First Coast Veterinary Specialists & Emergency handles the transfer smoothly.
  • Continuous licensed team presence. Your pet is monitored by the same team that runs the practice, not a rotating overnight crew. During business hours, someone with medical training is always in the building.
  • Same-day diagnostics available. In-house lab and imaging on-site means real-time adjustments to the treatment plan as new information comes in.
  • Communication through the day. Midday updates for extended stays. You know what's happening without having to call to check.
  • Post-surgical recovery specialty. Pets recovering from procedures done at SJB stay under the care of the team that performed the surgery. Continuity from consult through recovery.
  • Coordinated referral to First Coast Veterinary Specialists & Emergency. If overnight care is needed, the handoff is direct. Full medical records transfer with the pet, and the receiving team gets a clinical briefing.

How Hospitalization Fits with Your Wellness Plan

Hospitalization is not covered under Complete Care Wellness Plans because it's a case-specific service that varies significantly in scope and cost from one situation to the next. Plan members do see benefits when hospitalization comes into the picture:

  • Member discounts on associated services during hospitalization (diagnostics, medications, imaging)
  • 10% off any related boarding stays through the Healthy Stay Advantage program
  • Priority scheduling for same-day admission when it's needed

For pets with chronic conditions that may require occasional hospitalization support (diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease), the plan's routine monitoring coverage helps catch issues early enough to often avoid hospitalization in the first place. Prevention through routine wellness is the best way to keep your pet out of the hospital.
